As most of you all know we were doing the Ask Series almost every month, however this time we decided not to do it and do a little Pre-GN2010 interview with out lovely bot coder kalhimeo.
You can find the interview bellow
To most of the users you are known as kalhimeo or as the bot coder who along with myst created one of the most successful gather-network systems in Europe, however could you tell us who kalhimeo is and what does he do besides coding for GN?
Hi there! Well, it's quite a vast question. Let me introduce myself first: I am a 27 years old “french speaking” Belgian guy, living close to Brussels. My people use to call me Laurent, but in fact it does not sound as cool as "the bot coder" ;-). After a few years of long studies, small jobs and a lot of parties, I entered three years ago the DHL Company as First Officer on the Airbus A300B4. When I am not behind the computer working on the bot, the sky is where I spend a lot of my time.
How did you come up with the idea to create something big like Gather-Network?
Very simple: originally there was not such a plan.
Then years ago I played in a major Counter-Strike clan in Belgium and since we are a small country I quickly met most of the important Belgian players. This high-end player community was a little bit pissed off playing on public servers with whiners, people treating you as cheater, etc. So I decided to create a gather bot to make it easier to play with my CS friends. That's how the first gather channel was opened with the first bot version called PWF (standing for "Play With Friends").
After a few months of successful activity, we saw a lot of gather channels opening everywhere on Quakenet using my bot code (which was open source and free of download at that time). Then started the problems: to have a successful gather channel you need a good pool of players to fill the 10 slots and to play as substitute when needed. With all those new channels, the pool of player became split on all the different channels and the quality/number of gathers started to decrease. Then came the idea to build a united gather community, distributed on channels based on concrete criteria like the game played and the spoken language. I decided to call that union the "Gather-Network".
Which year do you think was ONE of the best years for GN?
I am someone very optimistic in every day’s life, so I always want to do better than the previous year. That's why I would answer that this year will be the best :) If I look back in the GN history, I remember some important milestones like when myst caught up the team with the creation of the website or the first time I successfully linked the bot with a game server.
